Elizabeth Ann Pallister [p.1.6.3.6.1.5]

Elizabeth Ann Pallister was the fifth child of William Pallister & Sarah Harker born at Heworth, Co Durham in Jan-March 1857.

Elizabeth Ann & her parents & her brothers & sisters were living at Heworth Colliery in 1861.

In 1871 the family had moved to Usworth & were living at Railway Row.  Elizabeth was still living at home with her 3 brothers & 2 sisters.  Her father William, a coal miner died later that year, aged 48.

In 1877 Elizabeth gave birth to an illegitimate baby boy in Usworth, who was christened Peter Pal(l)ister on October 31st, 1877 at Gateshead.  Peter was raised by his grandmother & step-grandfather, James Hall, as he was with them at the time of the 1881, 1891 & 1901 censuses.

Elizabeth (Ann E on census) was working as a domestic servant in 1881 for William Cock Warne, a copper refiner, & his family at Aston House, Hebburn, Jarrow, Co Durham.

On November 11th, 1882 Elizabeth married James Dempster McVey at the Registry Office, South Shields.  James was born April 19th, 1861 in Antrim, Ireland, the son of Ann Dempster & Thomas McVey.

In 1891 Elizabeth & James were living at 57 Johns Lane, Hebburn & James was a labourer at the copper works.  They had a son Thomas (7) & 3 daughters – Ann Dempster (6), Sarah H (4) & Margaret (2).

By 1901 the family had moved to 13 Lyon Street, Hebburn & James was now a steam craneman at the shipyard.  Son Thomas was also a labourer at the shipyard & daughters Ann Dempster, a general domestic servant, Sarah Harker & Margaret were still at home.  There were 3 more children by now – James Henry (10), Hannah (5) & Elizabeth Ann (2).

Elizabeth & James had moved to 125 William St, Hebburn by 1911 & James had returned to working at the copper works as a crane driver.  At home were James, a putter at the colliery,  Hannah, Elizabeth & a grandson George Hardy, aged 3.

Elizabeth Ann died in Oct-December 1918 at South Shields.

James died in April-June 1937 at South Shields.
